I like to bring this little excerpt of an interview to Hitoiro Saito (even back in 1998) and published in Aikido Journal .

Saito tells how life took place in Iwama in the presence of O 'Sensei and how they taught.
Saito points out that O 'Sensei, during the teachings, was very strict, so much to bring this passage:
"(...) he truly instructed in Iwama and was very strict.
He Would Shout, "What kind of kiai is that! Go outside and see if you can down a sparrow with your kiai. "
Or, to someone Applying to yonkyo sloppy, " Go out and try it on a tree! Keep at it till you peel off the bark! "(...)"
( in Italian:" really taught in Iwama, and he used to be very strict. You could hear shouting "What kind of kiai this is! Go out and try to
shoot down a sparrow with your kiai. yonkyo Or who ran a rather lackluster, said: "Go out and try it on a tree! Continue until you can not pull off the bark. ")
We have branches enough to try our yonkyo? :)
We Kiai worthy of the name of our dojo?
