The role of Tori and Uke


L'allenamento dell'Aikido è basato su tecniche pre-codificate che vengono praticate fra due persone (la possibilità di potersi dedicare ad una pratica c.d. "libera" viene invece lasciata solo agli allievi più esperti).

Il percorso base per colui che riceve la tecnica di Aikido ( uke ) è quello di dare inizio a ciò attaccando la persona che applicherà la tecnica di Aikido (quest'ultimo generalmente chiamato tori oppure nage se si applica una tecnica di proiezione, oppure uke-jo o uke-tachi se si utilizzano le armi). Tori , dunque, utilizzerà una tecnica di Aikido per neutralizzare l'attacco di Uke.

Sia il ruolo di Uke che quello di Tori sono essenziali nella pratica dell'Aikido. Entrambi studiano i principi di adattamento e armonizzazione. Tori impara ad armonizzarsi ed a controllare l'attacco e l'energia di Uke , mentre quest'ultimo impara a diventare calmo e flessibile in una situazione di svantaggio e squilibrio nella quale viene portato dalla tecnica di Tori .

Uke continua a cercare il proprio equilibrio e coprire i propri lati deboli (magari tentando, to an advanced level of practice, to apply against the technical Kaeshi -waza), while Tori uses his position, timing and technique to keep Uke in imbalance and disadvantage.

The "reception of the art" by Uke is called "ukemi " and a good ukemi includes attention to the technique itself, the partners and the surrounding environment. It is not, therefore, of an active but passive. The fall is a component of Aikido as a way to uke to learn to receive, as safely as possible and return to a balanced position, what would otherwise a technique would be devastating.
